Salvation Army ChristmasWe had such fun on this blog site last year during the Christmas season!

Every couple of days we posted vintage public service announcements by celebrity friends of The Salvation Army.

Most of the PSAs were produced during the 1950s through the 1980s and featured notable actors, actresses, athletes, and comedians encouraging the public to give generously to The Salvation Army!

Here’s a link to each of the PSAs with a fun fact about the stars.

Can you guess who’s in each spot?

1 – This PSA was recorded by the man who made “Holly Jolly Christmas” famous. He also narrated the classic Rankin – Bass TV special “Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer.” Who is it?

2 – The star of this PSA was Half Pint’s ‘pa’, famous for his lengthy and legendary career in television. He sure loved The Salvation Army too. Can you figure out who it is?

3 – Uncle Miltie” was the featured player in this spot long before he was inducted into the Comedy Hall of Fame in 1991. Do you know who it is?

4 – This sweater-clad comedian sings hooray for The Salvation Army Band – and is the star of this vintage kettle TV ad! Who do you think it is?

5 – This American treasure, who’s famous for singing “Thanks for the Memories,” was in this old-school Christmas TV ad. You know who that is, right?

8 – This Hall of Fame Cowboy isn’t famous for his work on horseback. The winner of both the Heisman Trophy and Super Bowl MVP, he was a star for our Army when he appeared in this Christmas ad. Who do you think it is?

9 – The original host of The Tonight Show and his lovely wife appeared in this holiday PSA about 30 years ago. In addition to TV and radio, he was also a prolific songwriter. Can you guess who it is?

10 – He fed his dogs Alpo and voted the second most popular TV dad for his role in Bonanza. Here he is in this Salvation Army Christmas ad. Who is it?

11 – This actress is one of only a dozen people to ever win a Grammy, an Emmy, a Tony and an Oscar! Called “The First Lady of the American Theater,” here she is in a kettle TV spot. Can you name her?

12 – The stars of this spot had nine kids between them but their most famous ‘dependent’ sold at auction for $266,000. Can you guess who?

Hope you enjoyed this little bit of Salvation Army history! Thanks for caring about what we do and the people we help through your Christmas giving.
