Every year our National Headquarters staff picks their favorite photos of the year and posts them to their blog on December 31st. Each of the photos chosen this year were snapped by my colleague John Docter! The photos provide a great glimpse into The Salvation Army’s world, complete with young musicians, officers (pastors) in training, and notables like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jeremy Lin and Luc Robitaille joining us to serve needy people who God loves!
There’s a lot of talk around The Salvation Army about kids this time of year. Our legendary Christmas programs include a number of ways for do gooders to care for kids whose families can’t afford Christmas. But did you know that there are several programs which provide Christmas cheer for senior citizens who have few people in their lives left to care for their needs this time of year?
This year’s Rock the Red Kettle Concert was incredible! We were blessed to have talented artists such as Shawn Mendes, Becky G, R5, Bea Miller, Exist Elsewhere, and Josh Levi grace the stage in support of our 124th Red Kettle Campaign. What we didn’t know that night was that watching from the audience was a pair of talented young women who not only heard our message about Doing The Most good and giving back this holiday season, but took it upon themselves to help us spread the word.
Jason P. Lester is an not just an elite athlete, he’s an ultra-endurance athlete. To give you a sense of what that means, he just ran 2,600 miles across the Great Wall of China in 83 days! He’s using his incredible training and stamina for good by running non-stop run for 72-plus hours to raise toys and funds to support Christmas for kids in need in Hawaii.
Major Butch Soriano has reached the halfway mark in his quest to ring the bell at his kettle for 150 hours!
US Marines in full dress uniform! Yep, I thought that might get your attention. This time of year The Salvation Army in Southern California gets to see a lot of the Marines. For the last three years, we’ve been the distribution partner for their famous Toys for Tots campaign. It’s estimated that we’ll get a whopping 150,000 toys from them to give to kids whose families are struggling to provide Christmas this year!
As freshmen at the University of North Carolina (UNC), Thomas Doochin, Taylor Sharp and Jake Bernstein sat around the dorm room late at night having conversations about giving. Specifically, how to revolutionize giving by making it easy and meaningful for those with lots of resources to be matched with those who have few.
UPS is a great friend to The Salvation Army. This year they’re highlighting our Angel Trees that deliver wishes to kids in need. But that’s not all! For every post tagged with #WishesDelivered on the UPS Facebook page or on Twitter, UPS will donate $1 to one of their three charity partners this Christmas season: Toys for Toys, Boys & Girls Club and The Salvation Army!
